We are getting ready to go on a 6,000 mile trip and I got the Interim Notice yesterday. What are we to do? Should this ve fixed before we leave? It sounds pretty serious to me and I am worried as we will be in a mountainous area and I am afraid of having brake problems. Please advise us as to what we should do right away as we plan to leave on June 5th, 2009. Thank you
I have right front wheel brake problems on my motorhome, had it checked and they couldn’t find any problem. Brought it home, took it out one month later same thing, got drag, got so hot brake fluid came out onto the tire. Very little brake. I’m so glad that we have a recall. The ABS light stays on all the time now.
We just returned home from a 1500 mile trip and are getting ready to leave again for a 2200 mile trip. We had several times during the previous trip when the ABS light came on. Each time I noticed the light I checked the brakes and they seemed normal. The light was intermittent. Is there anyplace around St George Utah that I could get it checked out? Is it OK to to leave for our next trip? Planning on leaving about June 20.
I have a 2003 Holiday Rambler Vacationer on a W-22 chassis. I have had brake trouble since 8000 miles. We now have 23000 miles on the motorhome. I have questioned the problem and was told the recll only covered through 2002. We have trouble on every trip we make. There is no rhyme or reason when it will happen. All of the sudden we smell hot brakes and one wheel or other wil be smoking. I get my trusty hammer and thump on the caliper and it usually releases. I also keep the pins and slides well lubricated which seems to help. On this trip from Florida to upstate New York it happened and I had NO brakes until they cooled down. Lucky I was on the open road with very little traffic. Hope we can get this corrected VERY SOON. Thank You

I got the recall notice about my brakes on my motorhome/Workhorse. The ABS light has always been on from day one and one of the front brakes has made a noise when the brakes are applied. I wasn’t sure why the light was on but, I thought the dealer MOTOR HOME SPECIALIST of Alvarado, TX would have said something if it was important. The motorhome is a 2005 Bounder. We bought this motorhome last November 2008. We have run this motorhome over 7000 miles from November. Yes, we have an appointment tomorrow with the Workhorse shop to have this fixed.
VIN # 5B4MP67G143389728 Recall # 59193. The Workhorse shop is located in West Salem, WI. If there is more I need to know please let me know. Thanks.

, 30ft. Has the same problems, cleaned calipers, slides etc. Still has happened, almost afraid to take it out . Makes for a nervous ride. Glad to share info, maybe can get some help.thanks
Just drove my 2004 holiday rambler on a W-22 chassis for a ride to the gas station and found rear brakes to be sticking causing drag and burning brake smell, I got my interim recall notice , but when I called my workhorse service center to schedule repair , they told me their wasn’t much they could do and workhorse probably wouldn’t pay for the repair . I am hoping this is not the fact, anyone else having service issues . Thanks
I have a 2004, 36 ft infinity, W22 and it is in the Freightliner Dealer in Dothan, Alabama due to the brakes over heating. We were traveling from Tennessee to Florida where we live. We first noticed a real strong smell and by the time I could get off the highway the ABS light came on. The brake pedal went to the floor and I had little or no brakes.. I eased along until I could pull off in a church parking lot. We called workhorse and they gave us the name of the place to take it to in Dothan. I considered driving it back to Dothan to the repair facility but after trying it in the parking lot we did not feel safe. We spent the night in the parking lot and the next day Good Sams had it towed to the repair shop. We were in traffic and it was not a safe situation to be in. We are waiting on parts and repair authorization at this time so we can get it home. This happened on a Friday and we are told it could take a while to get the parts. At this point Workhorse has been very responsive to resolve the problem and we hope it continues.
2003 Southwind W22. Have had all four calipers seize at varying times from 8000 miles to the 18000 miles currently on the motorhome. Have experienced overheating causing brake failure in traffic. Rotors are now so warped that pulsation is in-tolerable. My local authorized dealer in Philadelphia PA is not aware of any interim recall. Suggested I call Workhorse. Workhorse suggested I call the dealer. How is that responsive or responsible?? This is a 22,000lb vehicle with virtually no brakes and this is not an immediate recall?. Workhorse better step up quick or it will be back to Ford for me.
I have a 2004 Itasca 36M on a W22 Chassis. I have not received a recall notice and I am the original owner. This past weekend the ABS light came on and the brake pedal was very low and soft. I went on-line to check and see if there was a recall and I found this one. I called Workhorse at the number given on this notice and reached Paula. She claims there is not recall, only a bulletin.
I called the NHTSA and they said to keep calling Workhorse until someone gives me the answer I want.
I have a 2004 National SeaBreeze LX on a W22 Chassis. Got the recall notice in May. On vacation and coming home from the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains, I experienced “burning brake smell, ABS light illuminated and stayed on, and mushy brake pedal”. I did immediately notify Workhorse of this and asked for help. The 19 year old girl speaking to me told me “Well you have to pay if it’s not associated with our recall.” That is how they are fending customers off. It is a shame.
These RV’s should be recalled ASAP and safety checked before someone get killed.
McGeorge RV in Ashland, Va. has had my 2005 Holiday Rambler with a P33 workhorse chassis since August 11, 2009. It seems I’m having similar problems with the brake system. After noticing the parking brake light on for a while, we stopped at a rest stop and then the parking brake would not disengage at all. We had to have the pressure switch removed altogether to get it to McGeorge. All I get is the runaround from McGeorge about waiting for a part from Workhorse. I had to rent a car to get home to North Carolina. Is there any type of recall on these Workhorse P33 series going on?
We have had the brake calipers (after they were inspected and found to be in great condition by a Workhorse dealer) on both front wheels overheat and blow out the axle seals. A letter written to Workhorse two months ago has not been answered. Navistar/Workhorse obviously does NOT care about safety and is not stepping up to their responsibility. Will proceed to make this situation public via TV, Motorhome magazine, and websites to get them to take action.
I have a 2003 (built 2002) Int’l truck Model 4400 SBA LP 4×2 475, and ever since about 20,000 miles, the brakes have failed in a major life threatening way over 10 times. I’ve contacted the factory and they denied a recall, and we have no faith in the local dealer. So I have paid any repairs myself. I finally hired a specialist who advised me of the recall on 35,000 school buses and he put in touch with a Regional Service “Rep” for Navistar The “Rep” said my serial number was not included in the recall, I would still have to bear the cost myself. So, we purchased the slider pin kits (the so-called “fix”) and the kits were installed on all 4 wheels. And they lasted about 4 months. Today, Jan. 19, 2010, those failed too. The calipers stuck and the rotors were glowing red. I only have about 50,000 miles on this truck. I purchased it to haul our 32′ fifth wheel trailer with the “safety” of truck brakes, and have a fortune tied up in it (probably over $100,000), making a gorgeous tow body. But without brakes, it’s worthless! Navistar engineers really screwed up on their brake design and the company is just “kissing us” off. Is there a class action lawsuit out there somewhere?

On our way in to Ft Meyers Beach 0n 1/28/10 after driving 1100 miles with no problems left front brake caliper began to sieze with strong burning smell and continuous ABS light on,mushy pedal with minimum braking. We made our way to Palm Truck Center after brakes cooled and were once again normal except for ABS light on.Oil was found dripping from cap and wheel area, turned out to be oil from bearing hub that shot out after overheating. Both front hubs were found way overfilled beyond maximum.Brake fluid was normal and clear.Brakes were deemed safe `till next time sans ABS.Waiting for recall to get it fixed right.Otherwise I have high regards for the WH package…….HB
We have a 2004 National Seabreeze that is on recall list.
In March 2007 on a short trip we noticed a horrible smell, brakes became mushy,
calipers melted then ABS light came on. We had brakes repaired in Pensacola at Baughn Brake & Alignment (they did a great job) at a cost of $3300. At that time the owner of Baughn called Workhorse and told them this was a defect and they should cover cost. They denied it. Our motor home only had approx 15,000 miles at the time.
Now Workhouse told me that because the repair was done before November 2007 they would NOT Reimburse us, and Workhorse said that was a rule of the National Hwy Traffic Safety Adm. I called them and they said that was not true.
Has anyone had this problem? Donnie
In 2005 i bought a 2003 Itasca motorhome on a W20 workhorse frame. The brakes have been an issue from the time I bought the unit, twice I lost all braking action, i had the abs sensors melt on two different times (different wheels) I never know how long I can drive without the brakes sticking and over heating causing us to park up 8 hours before being able to continue. Workhorse sent me a letter last summer admitting a problem, and would have the fix by the fall of 2009. so far no fix now they say the fall of 2010.
I understand there is a class action suit. if an one knows how I can learn more about the law suit please contact me at (rjdefd1962@yahoo.com or call 262-758-2340)
We have a 2002 38 ft Vacationer This is the second time I’ ve had the mushy brake . First time I had the ABS light stayed on and calipers heated up that I lost all brakes. Luckily we were able to drifted into a parking lot and contact the dealer. They then had us towed to the shop and Work horse told them there is and issue with the braking system and they tried to fix the problem. Replaced the ABS sensor and calipers and brakes. But now it has happened again two years later this week end. The fix was just temporary. If this happens on a hill I’m afraid what might happen. I got the letter but thought it was already solved. I need to find that letter and get in line with the rest of you.
We just purchased (June 26th) a 2004 Bounder with a W-22 Workhorse Chassis. The purchase was made at Poulsbo RV in Kent, WA and we live in Helena, MT. Had always heard great things about Workhorse – until now.
On the way home, after two mountain passes, the rear breaks failed and we were stranded in Yakima, WA. After a lot of run around – Poulsbo stepped up to the plate and paid for the “fix” – replacing front rotors and pads and rear rotors, calipers, pads and seals. Finally were back on the road yesterday.
Three passes later and back in Helena, the front calipers seized and we are back as square one. Poulsbo is being great about it (so far), but we find we now can’t get the parts from Workhorse to repair the problem (may months away). Very frustrating with relatives coming for a trip to Yellowstone in two weeks and we don’t have the rig.
To me, it seems very irresponsible (if not negligent) to be selling a workhorse product with this know defect and not inform the buyer. What if there is a death as a result of this problem? I think it is inevitable from what I’ve read so far.
Just hoping that we can get this resolved SOON.
Does anyone have ideas?
I have 2008 Winnebago Voyage 32H on a Workhorse Chasis and I received a Check ABS Brake warning light on my dash. I was backing the RV into my driveway after a 250 road trip. The warning light stayed on until I took it out for a little ride around town and it went off as I pulled out of the subdivision. Ran fine with no more warning light but when I got home and exited the RV I smelled hot rubber. Like I burned rubber out of the driveway. I think it was my rear inside dually. I have phoned Coach Net and they were not much help but after researching recall notices for my RV I have found many owners with Workhorse Chasis brake problems. In Salt Lake City, Utah there is only 1 dealer that will work on Workhorse. If you are in the market for an RV please reconsider the Ford Chasis before you get stuck like I am. I’m afraid to drive my RV until someone will give me some answers. It has 5,700 miles. Reconsider your choices and if you suspect issues with your brakes search on Workhorse RECALLS and you will be surprised like I was.
